About Anuradhapura

The First Capital of an Ancient Kingdom

Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura served as the political and religious capital of Sri Lanka for over a millennium. The city grew around the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi — a fig tree(ficus religiosa) grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Its colossal dagobas, sacred ponds, and ruined monasteries speak of a civilisation that built on a scale rivalling ancient Rome and Egypt. Today, the site remains a living pilgrimage destination for millions of Buddhists worldwide.

Essential Tips & Practical Info

☀️
Best Time to Visit

November to April (dry season) is ideal. Sunrise visits before 7 AM offer magical golden light on the stupas with far fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.

👗
Dress Code

Cover shoulders and knees at all sacred sites. Remove shoes before entering temple grounds. White clothing is welcomed at pilgrimage sites.

🍛
Food & Water

Try authentic rice & curry at local rest houses. Carry at least 2L of water — the heat and distances are deceptive. Coconut water stalls are everywhere.

📷
Photography

Permitted at most sites. Never pose with your back to Buddha statues. Sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic light on the brilliant white stupas.
