About Central Highlands

Explore The UNESCO World Heritage Mountain Ecosystems

Sri Lanka’s eighth UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Central Highlands, was inscribed in 2010, recognizing its exceptional natural beauty and ecological importance. This remarkable region brings together three protected areas, the Peak Wilderness Protected Area (home to Sri Pada), Horton Plains National Park (featuring World’s End), and the Knuckles Mountain Range. Recognized by UNESCO, the Central Highlands are one of South Asia’s most important biodiversity hotspots. The region is home to a high level of endemism, including rare species such as the Sri Lankan leopard, purple-faced langur, and the colorful Sri Lanka blue magpie. Its unique montane cloud forests and grasslands support ecosystems found nowhere else on the island.

Rising over 2,500 meters above sea level, the highlands play a crucial role as the country’s main water catchment area, feeding major rivers and sustaining agriculture and communities across Sri Lanka. The sheer escarpment at World’s End drops nearly 900 meters, offering one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the country, while the Knuckles range, named for its resemblance to a clenched fist, features diverse microclimates, hidden waterfalls, and remote villages.

Beyond its natural significance, the region also holds deep cultural and spiritual value. Sri Pada is a sacred pilgrimage site revered by multiple religions, attracting thousands of devotees annually.

The Central Highlands stand as a powerful blend of natural wonder, ecological importance, and cultural heritage, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary and treasured landscapes.

Essential Tips & Practical Info

☀️
Best Time to Visit

December to April offers the driest conditions for tracking trails and climbing Adam’s Peak safely, with clear views before afternoon mists roll over the edges.

👗
Dress Code

Highland weather changes rapidly from blistering sun to freezing wind and heavy rains. Pack thermal layers, reliable raincoats, and sturdy, non-slip trail boots.

🍛
Food & Water

These parks are strict single-use plastic zones. Bags are checked at park entries; keep your snacks and water in eco-friendly reusable containers.

📷
Photography

Pack a reliable dry bag or rain cover for your lenses. The early morning mist yields ethereal, moody landscape shots, but can easily damp unprotected electronics.
